Leaders of OpenAI disagreed with Elon Musk's claims outlined in the lawsuit against the company. They believe that Musk is simply upset that he is no longer part of the company that develops artificial intelligence.

In an internal company memo, Sam Altman called Musk his hero and said he misses the person he knew, who competed with others to create the best technologies.

“We believe the claims in this lawsuit may be related to Elon's regret that he is not involved in the company today,” wrote OpenAI's Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon in the memo. “It is very disappointing to see Elon taking action against the company he helped found, especially given his close collaboration with some of you who are still working on the mission.”

In the memo, Kwon noted that the company's mission still revolves around benefiting all of humanity. He also said that OpenAI is independent and competes directly with Microsoft, despite receiving funding from it.

Jason Kwon informed employees that after the events of last November (presumably referring to Sam Altman's removal), government agencies asked the company for some information and the company cooperates with the government.

“After the events of last November, they asked us for information, and this is in line with what we expected given the circumstances.”

Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015 and left the board of directors in 2018, four years after stating that artificial intelligence is “potentially more dangerous than nuclear weapons.”

Now Musk is suing OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. He claims that the company has deviated from its mission of developing artificial intelligence “for the benefit of all mankind” with which it was founded.

Musk's lawyers stated that their client contributed over $15 million to OpenAI in 2016, “more than any other donor,” and helped the startup build a team of “the most talented individuals.” The following year, Musk allocated nearly $20 million to OpenAI, which, according to the lawyers, was more than other sponsors. According to the lawsuit, Musk invested over $44 million in OpenAI from 2016 to September 2020.
