The next version of the PlayStation 5 Pro gaming console will feature support for the new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology. It is designed to provide display of games on the console with 4K 120 fps and 8K 60 fps settings. This is a kind of DLSS analog.

This information emerged after leaked details about the PS5 Pro (code-named Trinity). It became known that the future console will support PSSR to enhance the quality to a higher resolution. Currently, PSSR operates on SDK 9.00 in the PlayStation 5 Pro to provide 4K resolution.

As indicated in the documents accessed by the Insider Gaming resource, PlayStation's intentions for PSSR are to achieve video settings of 4K 120 fps and 8K 60 fps. Although this is not the goal for the PS5 Pro due to hardware limitations, it is an internal target for PSSR in future interaction with PlayStation consoles. PSSR in the PlayStation 5 Pro currently supports a resolution of 3840×2160 and is aimed at 4K 60 fps and 8K 30 fps, but it is unclear if these internal goals can be achieved.

Approximately 250 MB of memory is required for PSSR to operate. The requirements consist of 180 MB from the PSML library and another 64 MB from the game.

Insider Gaming also disclosed the results of PSSR's work for two proprietary PlayStation games, the names of which are not revealed.

Game 1

The aim is to achieve image quality close to Fidelity Mode (1800p) for Performance Mode FPS (60 fps)

PlayStation 5:

  • Performance Mode — 1080p at 60 fps
  • Fidelity Mode — 1800p at 30 fps

PlayStation 5 Pro:

  • 1440p at 60 fps (utilizing PSSR)

Game 2

The goal is to add ray tracing to gameplay.

  • PlayStation 5 achieved 60 fps without ray tracing.
  • PlayStation 5 Pro achieved 60 fps with ray tracing.
