Honda has recalled more than 750,000 vehicles produced from 2020 to 2022. The company says that the weight sensor, designed to deactivate the passenger airbags if the seat is occupied by a child or a child seat, may not function properly.

The impact of moisture can lead to a crack and failure of the capacitor in the sensor. The problem was related to a change in the material for the sensor's printed circuit board: Honda's supplier made changes when a natural disaster disrupted production at another supplier. The altered printed circuit board was not properly checked and may lead to additional stress on the capacitor, causing it to fail and short internally.

A warranty claim in August 2020 was Honda's first indication of a problem. The initial investigation yielded no results, but the automaker continued to receive claims and decided to recall vehicles in January 2024. It is noted that from June 2020 to January 2024, 3834 warranty claims were filed for this issue. In January 2022, the sensor supplier reverted to the original material for the printed circuit board, but the problem still concerns the following models:

  • Acura MDX 2020, 2022
  • Acura RDX, 2020-2022
  • Acura TLX, 2020-2021
  • Honda Accord 2020-2022
  • Honda Accord Hybrid 2020-2021
  • Honda Civic 2020-2022
  • Honda Civic Type-R 2021
  • Honda CR-V 2020-2021
  • Honda CR-V Hybrid 2020-2021
  • Honda Fit 2020
  • Honda HR-V 2020-2022
  • Honda Insight 2021
  • Honda Odyssey 2020-2022
  • Honda Passport 2020-2021
  • Honda Pilot 2020-2022
  • Honda Ridgeline 2020-2021

The fix in this case will be a new seat weight sensor, which Honda will replace free of charge. The company is expected to notify owners early next month.
