Chinese electric car maker BYD has quality problems in export markets

Chinese electric vehicles BYD supplied to Europe, the Middle East and other Asian countries have quality issues.

As of the end of last year, BYD was the third largest automaker by market capitalization, right after Tesla and Toyota. However, transport vehicles exported from China require repair work upon arrival at their destination. Cars in Japan had scratches, while those that arrived in Europe had mold.

Although mold may be a common issue in cars, especially when they are stored for a long time in humid weather, the problem with BYD cars in Europe was that they did not receive proper treatment to remove mold, reports InsideEVs.

In Thailand, where Chinese electric vehicles have taken over the domestic car market, quality issues with BYD cars seem to be increasing. Complaints about paint and plastic peeling have become public knowledge. Meanwhile, in Israel, it is reported that BYD electric vehicles deform under the weight of roof racks.

This seems more like logistics issues rather than production defects. Maintaining strict quality control on a global supply route may become a new challenge for BYD. But it is still too early to assess whether these quality issues are a false alarm, or if BYD should take them very seriously.

The automaker's sales dropped in February 2024 due to an industry-wide slowdown. It is also expected that they will not be able to reach their internal target of selling over 400,000 cars in international markets this year.
