80% of surveyed parents in the UK believe that smartphones are "harmful" for children and young people, and 58% support their ban.

Two months ago, the UK government published guidelines on the use of mobile phones in local schools, after several surveys showed that society sincerely supports such decisions.

"We would like to see a law introduced where smartphones could only be used by people over 16," said Esther Gay in an interview with the BBC, the mother of 16-year-old transgender Brianna, who was brutally killed by peers last year. The killers, as reported, were obsessed with real video clips and torture videos in the darknet.

The Guardian reports that British ministers are currently considering the possibility of banning the sale of smartphones to those under 16. However, no official statements have been made yet.

"We do not comment on speculation. Our commitment to make the UK the safest place for children on the Internet is unwavering, as evidenced by our landmark Internet Safety Law," said a government spokesperson.

According to a March survey by Parentkind, which covered 2496 parents of school-age children in England, 58% of respondents believe that the government should ban smartphones for children under 16. Moreover, more than four out of five parents believe that smartphones are "harmful" for children and young people.
