Google has released the first beta version of Android 15, which includes several new features. Most of them will be of interest to developers.
The first beta version of Android 15 will work on devices from Pixel 5a to the latest models in the Pixel 8 series, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. This update provides more information on how large displays (foldable and tablets) work with apps. Google says that edge-to-edge software capabilities for apps are activated by default. This will be useful for developers as they no longer need to explicitly instruct the app to enable such capabilities. Additionally, Google Material 3 compositions are available to provide additional assistance to developers.
Furthermore, Android 15 receives additional support for app archiving. Google states that the first beta version displays OS-level support for archiving and unarchiving apps that are not in use, to benefit "all app stores." The OS will remove large API elements and cached files, but will retain user data. In this case, users will see that the app remains on the home screen of their device along with an icon indicating its "archived" status.
A separate focus in Android 15 is on improving security. This version introduces Key management feature for end-to-end encryption. The beta version offers OS-level key management for contact key APIs, allowing users to easily manage and verify another user's contact information.
New inclusivity features in Android 15 include support for TalkBack for Braille displays. The software is only compatible with Braille displays that use the HID standard via USB and secure Bluetooth.
